Cotton nappies for all newborns at the Conquest

Wednesday 24 November 2004

From now on, the first nappy a baby will wear at the Conquest Hospital in Hastings will be a washable cotton one helping to reduce the nappy mountain in landfill sites in the county.

Promoting the use of washable nappies plays a key role in the county council’s waste awareness initiative. Each year roughly 26 million disposable nappies are dumped in landfill sites in the county but these will be full in about three years time.

Commenting at the launch of the Conquest’s real nappy scheme, Councillor Matthew Lock, Lead County Council Member for Transport and Environment, said: This is part of our drive with Brighton & Hove City Council to reduce the enormous amount of nappies disposed of in landfill sites each year.

"It is great that washable nappies are in use in maternity units. I’m sure the scheme will be very successful and as a result, new parents will soon see that using washable nappies makes sense for everyone. Every time a real nappy is used it’s one less disposable one for the landfill."

Notes to editors

CottonBottoms will be laundering and delivering the nappies free of charge to the Conquest.

The real nappy promotional project was set up by East Sussex County Council working with Brighton & Hove City Council (the Brighton & Hove and East Sussex Real Nappy Network) as a waste reduction initiative. The Network funded the start up costs of the Conquest scheme. For more information on nappies and recycling, visit our nappies page.
