Together with the five waste collection authorities – Eastbourne, Lewes, Hastings, Rother and Wealden councils – it is planning to send in consultants to take a peek under our dustbin lids.
They will choose both town and country homes for the study, and carry out their checks in autumn and spring to cater for any seasonal variations. They will also survey the household waste recycling sites in each area.
The authorities will use the findings to produce a report, due to be delivered next March, to draw up future waste management plans.
The cost of the study is being met by a £70,000 grant from the Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs.
Councillor Matthew Lock, Lead Cabinet Member for Transport and the Environment, said: "East Sussex, like all local authorities, is facing tough recycling targets but we are determined to meet these. By 2005/06, we will be expected to ensure that 27% of the county’s waste is recycled or composted. To achieve this we need up-to-date and reliable data so we can deliver the waste and recycling services more efficiently”.
Recycling-based waste management specialists Network Recycling, based in Bristol, will carry out the waste analysis.
