Highlights of wood season

Monday 27 September 2004

If you go down to the woods today…East Sussex County Council will be delighted!

The authority is once again running its annual Wood Season, providing dozens of opportunities for people to get out and about to enjoy what nature – with a large helping hand from woodland managers – has provided.

Over the coming weeks, people will be able to:

  • go llama trekking in Ashdown Forest
  • try their hand at timber framing
  • enjoy a fungal fry-up from the toadstool harvest in Wilderness Wood, Hadlow Down
  • join in a firelight sing-song in Plashett Wood, near Lewes
  • take a spooky Halloween wood walk at Church Wood, Hastings.

In all, more than 100 events are being packed into a nine-week programme.

Councillor Matthew Lock, Lead Member for Transport and the Environment, says that Wood Season underlines the vital need for good sustainable management of our woods as well as offering a great opportunity for people to try out different activities: "Whether your interest is in the trees themselves, the industries that have grown up around them, the wildlife they support, or the simple pleasure of walking in magnificent woodland settings, Wood Season has something for you.”
