Press release

Film premiere for gifted children

Thursday 23 September 2004

Budding young film makers will celebrate the creation of four new films during a special Gifted and Talented Children’s film premiere next month.

The films, made entirely by year 6 and year 7 students from schools across East Sussex will be celebrated in true ‘Hollywood-style’ at The Phoenix Arts Centre, Hastings, on 16 October.

Over one hundred pupils, aged 11- 13yrs, took part in a one-week residential Gifted and Talented Film Making Summer School, organised by East Sussex County Council’s out of school hours learning team. The aim of the project was to provide gifted and talented pupils with opportunities to take part in enriching and challenging activities not usually offered to pupils of that age.

Students spent the week working alongside professional film makers, learning about all aspects of film making including script writing, acting, directing, producing, location scouting, continuity, camera operation and editing.

The outcome was four amazing short films which focus on powerful issues such as bullying and peer pressure. The out of school hours learning team is planning to screen the films at several schools across the county during national Anti-Bullying Week in November.

Joining the children at the Premiere will be family, friends, teachers, BAFTA representatives and County Councillors.

Notes to editors

The Premiere will start at 7.30pm on Saturday 16 October. You are very welcome to send a reporter and photographer to the event or we would be happy to arrange a telephone interview. More than 400 guests will be attending and the event will open with a short performance from a group of vibrant and talented performers from Zimbabwe.

To celebrate the remarkable achievements of the students, the Phoenix Arts Centre will be transformed into a glittering venue with the help of artists from Radiator Community Arts Group. Guests will be welcomed to the venue by a giant, illuminated ‘Oscar’ and hundreds of sparkling fairy lights!
