Cheap & Chic – New nappy scheme launched

Tuesday 24 August 2004

A new scheme is being launched to encourage parents in Hastings & St Leonards to use washable nappies.

The Washable Nappy Loan scheme is being launched tomorrow Wednesday 25 August) at 10.30am to 2.30pm at a ‘Play in the Park’ event at Alexandra Park, Hastings.

Chic, comfortable and convenient – the nappies are available at minimal cost and are much kinder to the environment because they reduce waste which normally has to go to landfill sites.

The Real Nappy Network has provided Sure Start, Hastings with nappies of various sizes to enable parents to make use of the nappies from birth to potty training. Parents can borrow a complete set for a refundable deposit (2 payments of £5) as a way to reduce the amount of waste created by their household.

Notes to editors

The Real Nappy Network was formed in early 2000. It comprises of Waste and Recycling Officers from the City of Brighton & Hove, East Sussex County Council, the District and Borough Councils of East Sussex, representatives from local nappy suppliers and laundry companies, health professionals, local childcare providers, NCT representatives.

The immense success of the group was recognised in 2002 when it won the Women’s Environmental Network (WEN) ‘Real Nappy Awards 2002 – Celebrating Working Partnerships’. It has also won, a ‘National Champion 2002’, Green Apple Award and another Green Apple Award for last year (2003).

Sure Start is a national programme, funded by the government which, brings together health professionals, child care and family support providers to offer a range of activities, services and opportunities for parents-to-be and families with children under the age of 4 years. Sure Start areas are chosen on the basis of a variety of economic, health and social indices including being identified as areas of predominantly low income.

Promoting the use of washable nappies plays a key role in local authorities’ waste awareness initiatives. Each year roughly 26 million disposable nappies are dumped in landfill sites in East Sussex alone and these sites will soon be full. There are health and cost benefits too. Washable nappies offer natural fabrics against the skin and parents can save themselves hundreds of pounds during the time their baby is in nappies.
