Teams began the mammoth task this week, and will work from the town centre outwards, putting in lines and signs, installing 69 parking machines and marking 11 bus stops.
Conservation experts have been heavily involved in planning the look of the signs to ensure that they fit in with the historic streets. A total of 362 signs will be put up with details of parking restrictions, once 311 old signs have been taken down.
Councillor Matthew Lock, Lead Member for Transport & Environment, commented: "With such an amazing amount of road markings to do, the teams are working at top speed. The scheme will bring real benefits to local people who currently struggle to find parking spaces and who have to deal with traffic congestion caused by people who park illegally . We’re still on course to start rolling the scheme out from 20 September although parking attendants will use their discretion while people get used to the scheme.”
A letter has been sent out to Lewes residents, advising them that they will be asked to move their cars for short periods of time while new road markings are painted on their streets.
Notes to editors
The parking scheme aims to benefit shoppers, residents and businesses by providing more opportunity to park, closer to where they need to be and by preventing congestion caused by illegal parking. It will be rolled out from September 20th and will apply Monday to Saturday 8am – 6pm.
Permits for residents, health workers, trades people and businesses will be available from the parking shop at 29, Station Hill from August 23rd and will need to be displayed from September 20th.
