Signs show rise in A-level passes in East Sussex

Thursday 19 August 2004

Early indicators show that students at the County’s schools have achieved record A-level passes for East Sussex.

Provisional results indicate an increase in the number of exam entries achieving A – E passes from 88 per cent in 2003 to 90 per cent this year (a typical student enters for three A-levels).

In addition, the results for the 11 secondary schools delivering A-level courses in the County indicate an increase in the average point score per subject entry from 74 in 2003 to 75 this year.

Councillor Keith Glazier, Lead Cabinet Member for Education at the County Council, said: "The provisional results are looking extremely promising for East Sussex. We look forward to celebrating good news with all our schools as the results become clearer over the next few days.

"Our students and our teaching staff have worked very hard to improve standards of achievement and it is to their credit – as well as to parents and governors for their support – when the overall pass rate increases.”

Around 850 students attending the County’s schools entered for A-level examinations this year, compared to 930 in 2003.

The average A/AS-level point score per student in East Sussex will not be known for some time.

Notes to editors

A-level grades are given the following point scores:

  • A – 120 points
  • B – 100 points
  • C – 80 points
  • D – 60 points
  • E – 40 points

A/S-level grades are worth 50 per cent of the same grade at A-level, and are not counted if a candidate has passed the A-level in the same subject.
