Summer fun with the ‘reading rollercoaster’

Friday 30 July 2004

A fun-packed programme of summer reading events for families in East Sussex is already in full swing.

The ‘reading rollercoaster’ offers children and their parents and carers the chance to take part in a whole host of interesting events designed to get children reading and families having fun together.

Organised locally by East Sussex County Council libraries, the reading rollercoaster initiative is taking place in libraries, schools and other venues across the County right up until the end of August. There are lots of events to enjoy and all are free but space is limited. People are asked to contact the venues concerned and book a place.

Find out what’s going on near you in our Summer Reading Game pages, or telephone your nearest library.

At the East Sussex events, children can meet the authors and illustrators of their favourite books and take part in story times, rhyme times and craft sessions. This year, libraries have joined forces with Family Learning to provide some exciting workshops for all the family.

Young people can get a collectors card and every time they read a book, they collect stickers, bookmarks and other great prizes. Events include:

  • Picture this! Meet Illustrator Claire Fletcher at Battle Library on 12 August
  • Rhyme time at Bexhill Library on 18, 25 August and 1 September
  • All you wanted to know about Enid Blyton at Eastbourne Library on 18 August
  • Be a ‘super sleuth’ with Sussex Police at Hailsham Library on 9 August and at Heathfield Library on 11 August
  • A fun afternoon with the Krazy Kat Theatre group in ‘Little Red Riding Hood’, a show with British sign language at Hailsham Pavilionon 24 August
