County Council re-opens Groombridge footpath

Monday 28 June 2004

East Sussex County Council has re-opened a footpath in Groombridge, re-uniting villagers with the local primary school.

The pedestrian bridge, which is owned by the Spa Valley Railway Company, had to be closed two years ago when it was considered by the County Council to be unsafe. The bridge carries a local public footpath which is an important link between outlying parts of Groombridge village and St Thomas’ CE Primary School. After requests from the Council, volunteers from the Spa Valley Railway Company have now rebuilt the footbridge and the approach steps, as well as erecting new safety fencing.

Commenting, County Councillor Matthew Lock, Lead Member for Transport and Environment said, "I am delighted that the County Council has been able to re-open this vital link between the school and the village. We appreciate the patience that the residents of Groombridge have shown while this bridge has been out of use, and are grateful for the efforts that the Spa Valley Railway Company has made in raising the funding for this work and undertaking the reconstruction.”
