Pedestrian Improvements in Lewes to be considered by Lead Member

Wednesday 23 June 2004

A programme of improvements which will benefit pedestrians in and around Lewes town centre are soon to be considered by the County Council’s Lead Member for Transport and Environment, Councillor Matthew Lock.

Working in partnership with other interested agencies, the improvements to be considered will include:

  • A 20mph zone in the town centre with clearly defined entry points, including a new roundabout on Phoenix Causeway and a new "gateway” on Offham Road, incorporating a pedestrian crossing and improved footway.
  • A programme of improvements to encourage walking and cycling
  • Improvement to Station Street including the opportunity to widen the narrow footways and enhance the visual appearance of the street.
  • Permanent measures to deal with the damage to pavements caused by delivery vehicles, particularly in front of the Law Courts with the possible use of bollards to protect a new slabbed footway.
  • Reducing car dominance in Cliffe High Street.

The County Council will be consulting with the other local councils, amenity societies and businesses with a view to seeking in principle, and financial, support for the measures.

Bob Wilkins, Director of Transport & Environment said, "The County Council will be using money it already has for road maintenance, but will also be looking to the other interested bodies for additional funding to make these environmental improvements. ”
