We wanted to know if you thought the existing parking scheme in Lewes and surrounding villages was working or whether changes need to be made.
We asked Atkins, a transport consultancy, to carry out this independent review on our behalf.
This consultation closed on Sunday 6 February 2011.
What happens next
Following eight separate exhibitions and surgery sessions, a total of 2,777 questionnaires were returned – a response rate of 26%.
Our consultants analysed your responses and have developed some recommendations. You can download both a full report and a summary of these recommendations, below.
Further consultation on these proposals took place in June 2011, see: Lewes parking review – summer 2011.
Background information
New parking controls were introduced in Lewes town centre in 2004 and have since been modified and extended. Limited controls were also introduced in some surrounding villages. We have decided to review the controls to make sure they best serve the current needs of residents, businesses and others.
Effective parking management can help:
- residents and their visitors to park near their homes
- businesses and other organisations by allowing space for customers and deliveries
- pedestrians, cyclists, buses, motorcyclists and taxis get around safely and more easily
- keep streets clear for emergency vehicles
- keep streets tidy and protect their character
- make streets safer by stopping people from parking at junctions and on bends.
All responses received will be treated in the strictest confidence. The collective responses from this survey will only be used for research purposes.
