What standards do you expect from Adult Social Care?

This consultation closed on 30 March 2010.

In East Sussex, we want to provide high quality services that meet the needs of everyone who uses them. Our new leaflet contains statements, setting out what you can expect from Adult Social Care.

You may be someone who uses services within Adult Social Care or you may be a carer of someone with adults social care needs. You could be a member of the public who is interested in the standards that we set. In any case, we asked for your views on this document.

The standards in the leaflet link back to the Performance Assessment Framework for Social Care which is a set of performance indicators that services are compared to. This means that quality is defined and measured against what you can expect from Adult Social Care.

What we wanted to know

We asked you to have your say by reading the leaflet and sending us your comments under the following question headings:

  • What do you think about what the leaflet looks like?
  • Where do you think you would likely pick this leaflet up?
  • Thinking about what is written in the leaflet (the standards statements), how easy or difficult are they to understand? You can comment on individual statements in the leaflet, if you want.
  • Is there anything about the way the statements are phrased that you wish to comment on?
  • Is there anything you feel we have missed out or we could improve?
  • Have we got the contact information right?

What you told us

People who responded to the consultation were generally in favour of our standards being set out, although minor changes were suggested. For example, how to get a larger print version of the factsheet and how to access the information in different languages needs to be featured more prominently.

The consultation also found that some people struggle with what ‘adult social care' and a ‘service user' is. They also wanted to see an approach that measured the quality of people's experience and saw them at the centre of their care.

What happened as a result

To reflect the fact that there is confusion around what adult social care is we have decided not to produce a separate standards leaflet. Instead the information has been incoporated into an updated version of our information leaflet called 'Who are we and how can we help you?'

The leaflet gives examples of some of the standards we set for ourselves. For example, that people can expect to be treated fairly and equally, and with dignity and respect and to be fully involved in their own support planning. Details on how to get other formats and languages of the leaflet are in a prominent place.
