Safer Schools Survey 2010 – have your say about bullying

We wanted to find out how pupils in East Sussex felt about bullying behaviour in their schools.

Background information

In order to make our schools and where our pupils live an even safer place to be, we needed to know about their opinions and experiences of bullying behaviour. When we talk about bullying we mean:

‘deliberate, hurtful behaviour, which is repeated over a period of time, where it is difficult for those being bullied to defend themselves'

Bullying can take many forms. These might include:

  • name calling, taunting, threats, mocking and offensive comments
  • kicking, hitting and pushing
  • taking and damaging other people's belongings
  • gossiping, excluding people from groups and spreading hurtful and untruthful rumours.

Who took part

Pupils from secondary schools across East Sussex took part in our annual survey in the run up to, or during, Anti-Bullying Week in November 2010. The survey closed on 17 December 2010.

What were they asked about?

The survey asked a number of questions including:

  • how safe and caring their school feels
  • details of their experiences of bullying in the past year
  • perceptions of bullying in the wider community
  • how aware they are of actions taken by the school to address bullying behaviour and the kind of support available to them in school.

What happens next

The results of this survey will help the work of our Anti-bullying Team.

We'll publish the full results of the survey here in 2011. Through running this survey every year we get detailed information about how bullying is changing within East Sussex. By providing us with a benchmark figures it lets us compare the impact of different anti-bullying measures, over time or across different schools.
