Community safety in your area

From February to December 2010 we asked for your views about the priorities for the East Sussex Safer Communities Partnership.

East Sussex Safer Communities Partnership

Every year the partnership looks at what it should focus on. We asked for your thoughts about what the priorities should be for keeping you safe in your local area, and throughout East Sussex. By ‘your local area' we mean the area within 15 to 20 minutes walking distance from your home.

The East Sussex Safer Communities Partnership works together to make your community a safe place to live, work and visit by reducing crime, anti-social behaviour, and drug and alcohol problems in East Sussex.

Members of the East Sussex Safer Communities Partnership include East Sussex County Council, Sussex Police Authority, Sussex Police, Sussex Probation Service, East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service, District and Borough Councils, Primary Care Trusts and the five Crime and Disorder Reduction Partnerships.

How to take part

The partnership originally asked residents these questions from July to September 2009. Read what you told us about community safety in 2009.

We repeated the online survey from Monday 1 February to Monday 20 December 2010 to get the views of those people who had not yet responded, as well as the views of residents who had previously completed the survey because their views may have changed over time.

This survey closed on Monday 20 December 2010.

Your comments will be treated in the strictest confidence and we will not share your personal data or views with anyone outside of the partnership.

What you told us

You told us that most of you (87%) felt safe outside in your local area during the day, and 58% felt safe out at night.

Your top concerns were anti-social behaviour, followed by road safety and burglary. You also told us about the places where you felt unsafe.

The results of the survey will be available on the websites of all the members of the partnership.

Actions taken

We shared your feedback with the East Sussex Safer Communities Partnership. They used this information to create a list of priorities for 2010 to 2011.

One initiative to tackle your concerns is 'Operation Quality Street'. These one day events, designed for a specific local area, bring all the key community safety organisations together for a co-ordinated 'tidy up' session. Community payback teams clear overgrown pathways, police remove untaxed vehicles, and residents get to meet all the organisations that have a role in promoting safety in their community including:

  • local police
  • probation
  • local fire service
  • district, borough and County Council services such as youth development, housing, waste and recycling, and community safety.

The East Sussex Safer Communities Partnership is currently using your responses, together with other data and information, to select its priorities for 2011 to 2012. These will be announced in February 2011.
