Background information

The Environment Strategy for East Sussex aims to protect and enhance our natural and man-made environment for current and future generations, and enable individuals and organisations to tackle and adapt to climate change.

The Environment Strategy Group – a wide range of individuals and organisations, including the County Council – have been working together to develop this strategy. It sets out our proposals for how the environment of East Sussex should be managed and improved over the next 15 years. This includes:

  • improving habitats to reverse and prevent the loss of plant and animal species
  • creating healthy seas and sustainable fisheries
  • developing high quality environments in our towns and villages
  • enhancing the distinctive character of the East Sussex landscape
  • encouraging people to use open spaces as part of active lifestyles
  • reducing greenhouse gas emissions and becoming more adaptive to climate change
  • minimising the amount of waste created and getting more waste re-used and recycled
  • reducing air pollution and noise.

In line with the current financial challenges, an aim of the strategy is to identify our environmental priorities so that we can focus our efforts on where they are most needed.
