We wanted to find out how pupils in East Sussex felt about bullying behaviour in their schools.
Who took part
Over 6,000 pupils from 21 schools took part in our annual survey in the run up to, or during, Anti-Bullying Week in November 2009. The survey is run every year.
What were they asked
The survey asked a number of questions which included:
- how safe and caring their school feels
- details of their experiences of bullying in the past year
- perceptions of bullying in the wider community
- how aware they are of actions taken by the school to address bullying behaviour and the kind of support available to them in school.
What did they tell us?
Of the young people who took part:
- 94% said they felt safe at school
- 88% said they enjoyed going to school
- 67% felt that their school dealt well with bullying behaviour
- 88% felt that their school sought and listened to the opinions of pupils
- 24% reported that they had been bullied in school in the last 12 months and of these 4.5% reported being bullied ‘a lot'
- 22% of young people who said they had been bullied didn't tell anyone about it.
What has happened as a result of this survey?
The results of this survey help the work of our Anti-bullying Team. Through running this survey every year we get detailed information about how bullying is changing within East Sussex. By providing us with a benchmark figures it lets us compare the impact of different anti-bullying measures, over time or across different schools.
