Preventing youth crime

Background

We have developed a strategy which aims to prevent children and young people from becoming involved in anti-social and criminal behaviour.

The strategy aims to find ways to identify the young people who are most at risk of being involved in anti-social behaviour and to identify the most effective types of intervention.

The scope of the initial consultation

We asked for your views on what should be included in the consultation, and asked:

  • what you felt the aims and objectives of the strategy should be
  • key issues about data analysis
  • who should be consulted
  • what should be included in the strategy
  • current services and resources
  • how can we improve on what we already provide
  • how we measure our success.

This initial consultation closed on 27 June 2008.

What happened next

Based on your responses, we wrote a draft strategy and consulted on it with a wide range of young people and partner agencies for 12 weeks from January 2009.

Following this consultation, we launched the final East Sussex Youth Crime Prevention Strategy in September 2009.

The Strategy

The Strategy sets out a multi-agency approach to preventing youth crime, working together to provide positive support and early intervention to reduce the number of young people who are at risk of becoming involved.

34 shared priorities are listed under three headings:

  • enforcement and punishment
  • support and challenge
  • better and earlier prevention.
