The Place Survey 2008

In the Autumn of 2008, thousands of households received questionnaires asking them about the issues that concern them the most. The survey asked what they think of the services received from a range of agencies including the County Council, borough and district councils, the Police, Fire and Rescue Service and Primary Care Trusts.

It is called the Place Survey and it was carried out by all local authorities in England.

The County Council and all the district and borough councils in East Sussex selected Ipsos MORI, an independent market research company, to carry out the survey on their behalf.

Who took part?

Between the end of September and 19 December 2008, 15,400 randomly selected households in East Sussex were sent a copy of the survey. This gave everyone an equal chance of taking part and ensured that a good cross section of residents was involved. Any member of the household aged over 18 could fill in the questionnaire.

Why is it important?

If your household was selected, it was your opportunity to have your say about life in the local area. It is important that we hear your views about topics such as affordable housing, facilities for young children, crime and anti-social behaviour and public transport so that we can put our resources where they really matter. The results will help us to work together to address issues of local concern and to see how and where our services can be improved.

What if I wasn't selected?

If you weren't selected this time there are other opportunities for you get involved and make your views known – explore our page on how to have your say.

What happened as a result of this consultation

The results were presented to Councillors and Council Officers on Friday 3 July 2009.

We have sent feedback from the survey to the relevant departments and we'll use it when we are planning services for the future.

We also asked our residents' panel some follow up questions to give us a better insight. The questions focused on satisfaction with the County Council and value for money.
