The second Safer Schools Survey – bullying
This survey ended December 2008.
It is hoped that schools will take part in the survey annually in the run up to, or during, Anti-Bullying Week. Running the survey every year will provide us with information on how bullying is changing within East Sussex.
Results
The final report on the survey results is available to download at the bottom of this page. Of the young people who took part:
- 91% said they felt safe at school
- 88% said they enjoyed going to school
- 76% said they would intervene if they saw someone else being bullied
- 72% of respondents said teachers and staff at their school took bullying seriously
- 30.8% reported being bullied in the last year and of these, 5.6% reported being bullied ‘a lot'
- 20% of young people who said they had been bullied didn't tell anyone about it, with one in four of those people experiencing ‘a lot' of bullying.
The survey
The survey asked children questions covering areas such as:
- how safe and caring their school feels
- details of their experiences of bullying in the past year
- perceptions of bullying in the wider community
- how aware they are of actions taken by the school to address bullying behaviour and the kind of support available to them in school.
Objectives
- Develop a system which will provide reliable data on bullying behaviour.
- Create a culture where schools routinely collect data on the bullying behaviour.
- Provide accurate baseline information so that the effectiveness and impact of individual anti-bullying initiatives can be assessed in individual schools year on year.
- Identify targeted support to schools and assess the impact of anti-bullying policies in relation to particular victim groups.
- Children and young people and parents/carers feel more confident that incidents of bullying are taken seriously.
The first Safer Schools Survey
The first round of the Safer Schools Survey was completed in July 2008. In total, 13 schools took part in the survey, with 3,527 young people completing the survey, making it one of the largest online surveys we have ever run. Find out about the first Safer Schools Survey.
