Our plans for providing services for older people
Consultation activity so far
Since November 2006 we have been working together with colleagues in health services to develop a Commissioning Strategy for Older People in East Sussex. A commissioning strategy describes the needs that people have and how we plan to provide services that will meet those needs.
In March 2007 we held an event in Eastbourne where over 100 people came together to give us their views on what we were proposing. Representatives for voluntary agencies (such as Age Concern and Care for the Carers), health professionals, carers and people who use services along with staff from organisations providing services worked together with us.
The event focused on understanding the range of services that we might need to provide, how these services are linked to the physical and mental health of older people and how different organisations can work together to provide better quality and value for money.
Joint Commissioning Strategy for Older People's Services
We have now completed the strategy and are working on implementing the action plan. The strategy is available to download below.
The strategy covers the full range of services for older people, from prevention and living independently in the family home to requiring residential or nursing care and end of life. This range of needs is described as a ‘care pathway’ and covers:
- fit and well though growing older
- experiencing problems that might be preventable
- in immediate need of help or treatment
- ready or preparing to go home (from hospital)
- in need of long term support or care.
The strategy recognises the importance of housing on the physical and mental wellbeing of older people. Adult Social Care is working with health and housing colleagues to include housing issues in the implementation of the strategy.
