Carers’ Needs Survey

What is the Carers’ Needs Survey?

In 2005, the County Carers’ Strategy Group commissioned a team from Brighton University to:

  • identify services and resources currently available to support carers in East Sussex
  • see how this matched up with the needs of carers
  • talk to carers about what they thought of current support services available to them.

The results of the work are published in the report below. Some of the main recommendations are to:

  • ensure a more even spread of carers’ services across the county
  • provide more flexible and varied services to support carers
  • ensure good information is provided about services available and that this is regularly updated and available
  • encourage GPs to identify carers at an early stage.

During 2006, we reviewed all the contracts we have with voluntary and private sector organisations that offer support services to carers, to develop a commissioning strategy. Using the Brighton University work, we set out our objectives for carers’ services, in order to re-negotiate existing contracts with organisations and invite providers to work with us to develop new services where necessary.
