Library non-user survey

During April and May 2005 we asked people who don’t use libraries how we can improve our services and encourage them to use our libraries.

Five street surveys were carried out in Bexhill, Eastbourne, Hastings, Lewes, Uckfield and focus groups were held with teenagers, people with disabilities, older people, and two general groups.

Results

You told us you would like:

  • better advertising of library services – including online services providing 24 hour access to libraries, especially for people who have difficulty visiting our buildings
  • library buildings to be relaxed, with a coffee shop feel and decor and areas for talking and study
  • signs outside buildings giving details of services, and floor plans
  • staff to be more customer focused.

Your impact

We will use your comments to improve our library services, including:

  • advertising services to encourage people to use libraries
  • training staff in customer care
  • refurbishing libraries where possible, including new furniture
  • book drop boxes for easy return of books
  • reviewing signs outside library buildings
  • emailing customers about our services in a libraries newsletter.
