Road Hierarchy Review – draft consultation discussion document
How can we ensure that traffic, particularly heavy lorries, is concentrated on main roads and kept away from more local roads? How can we develop local roads to give greater priority to pedestrians, shoppers and residents? How can we best preserve the rural environment of our country lanes?
This review considers the hierarchy of roads in the transport network from public rights of way through to motorways and trunk roads. It considers the overall function of all the roads in the County based on traffic flows, maintenance needs and suitability for public transport, cycling and walking. After consultation, the revised document will serve a number of purposes, such as guiding how we maintain the roads, helping us to plan regional and local land use and helping to steer traffic onto the most appropriate routes.
