The experience of disabled employees at East Sussex County Council

East Sussex Disability Association carried out a survey of disabled employees at East Sussex County Council. They examined the recruitment and selection process for disabled people seeking employment with us. The survey sought to:

  • assess the effectiveness of existing practices
  • understand what was working well
  • identify obstacles to gaining and sustaining employment as well as career development.

The results and suggested improvements to the way we work, are outlined in the ‘Final report of a disability assessment and survey of disabled employees carried out for East Sussex County Council in June – November 2004’ (attached below).

Following ESDA's report, the Council has employed a Disability & Diversity Officer. Their job is to make the changes that ESDA recommended including:

  • educating managers
  • setting up a forum for disabled employees
  • reviewing personnel policies and procedures.
