About me: Councillor Bob Lacey OBE
I was first elected as councillor for Eastbourne, Upperton in 1995.
But how did I get here?
I became interested in politics as a student. In 1968, I was elected in the London borough of Brent. What inspired me to stand as a councillor is my desire to challenge extremism on the one hand, and pedantic bureaucracy on the other.
As a councillor, you can influence the outcome of events. During my career, I have exposed political corruption with evidence to the Widdicombe inquiry, and proved that in certain circumstances, positive discrimination is desirable, achievable and must be time limited.
My community
East Sussex is a beautiful place to live. It offers a high quality of life, excellent schools and a great history.
One of the best things about being a councillor is having the ability to raise issues and challenge authority, particularly when that authority might be seen to be insensitive or irresponsible.
If you are interested in becoming a councillor, I recommend that you take the opportunity to serve your community. Local people with knowledge of the community and a sense of purpose and understanding make excellent local councillors.
My home life
I was born in Havant, Hampshire and spent part of my early life in the Western Isles, off the North West coast of Scotland.
I am married with three daughters, and we have a golden retriever.
My spare time
Being Chairman of the County Council is a full time activity. When I have the time, I enjoy pursuing my other interests which include working to extend democracy in Eastern Europe, especially in Lithuania, and take part in various charitable activities.
When occasions allow I am willing to give talks about the Baltic States (the race to freedom), Russian Spies (the Golitsyn predictions), and Whisky Galore (crofting life in the Outer Hebrides).
