My politics: Councillor Anthony (John) Barnes

Councillor Anthony (John) Barnes

Party: Conservative

Division: Rother North West

I first became interested in politics at school and I was lucky enough to be able to combine serving my local community with an academic career.

I found that serving on public bodies helped my teaching and I was able to further my interest in shaping education provision by serving on the education committee of the Kent County Council and East Sussex and also serving on various national bodies concerned with education.

Solving people's problems and teasing out ways to help the community is very rewarding and I am concerned to secure steady improvement in our public services.

Over the next four years I hope to help in bringing new village halls and schools to some of the villages I serve. I also want to secure a better route for the Hurst Green bypass, to reduce traffic speeds in the villages I represent, and to improve conditions for pedestrians in particular, but the residents more generally. Other priorities are a reduction in rural crime, better services for the elderly, and more amenties for the young.

I am proud to have been elected Chairman of the County Council and my priorities this year are to increase the recognition given to the tens of thousands of volunteers that help make this county a better place to live in and to promote the cause of music across the county.
