About me: Councillor Rosalyn St Pierre

Councillor Rosalyn St Pierre

I was elected councillor for Ringmer and Lewes Bridge in 2005. Having lived in the district since 1974, I am keen to ensure that smaller areas get proper access to services and amenities.

I think the region is outstandingly beautiful. I love the countryside and enjoy representing the local community who are bright, friendly and concerned about their environment.

But how did I get here?

A career and lifelong interest in international education and teaching English as a foreign language led me to become a school governor for Barcombe Church of England primary school for four years. It gave me an insight into how local government is run and really sparked my interest in local politics.

As my local councillor was retiring, I decided to stand for election to continue to make certain that my electoral division has good and proper representation, and that the voice of all the community is heard.

My community

My community is vibrant and active, I am proud to stand for their view and concerns. Access to local services such as doctors’ surgeries and safe, accessible and affordable transport is important to them.

It is also a great honour to work for the community as a Conservator of Ashdown Forest. The board works hard to preserve the forest as an amenity for local people of all ages and encourages access to wildlife conservation and education.

My home life

I have two children who went to South Malling and Lewes Priory schools. I remarried five years ago, but retain my former married name of Rosalyn Hurst through my authorship of English teaching books.

My spare time

In addition to my role in local government, I continue to work in international education by writing textbooks for the Oxford University Press, which are designed for government schools in East and Central Africa.

I also belong to two local book groups and really enjoy countryside walks. I’m a member of the Barcombe Footpath Association and a keen supporter of the Sussex Ouse Conservation Society.
