My politics: Councillor Carolyn Heaps

Councillor Carolyn Heaps

Party: Liberal Democrat

Division: Eastbourne - Old Town

Elected: 6 April 2009

The best thing about politics for me is getting out into the community, meeting people and listening to their issues.

I would like young people to get more actively involved in local politics so I think we need to make our meetings even more accessible, interesting and relevant to them.

I would heartily endorse a mentorship programme whereby interested young people could shadow councillors as part of the curriculum.

I will continue to campaign to get safe access to and from schools in our area and I am also interested in setting up and supporting a good neighbour pilot project in Old Town.

I will also be working with various agencies to ensure our young people will become engaged in more positive activities than they are possibly involved in at present.

As a nurse I am concerned about lifestyle issues such as childhood obesity and the dangers from our culture of binge drinking. These issues need to be tackled locally as well as nationally.
