About me: Councillor Carl Maynard

I was elected councillor for Brede Valley and Marsham in 2005 but I have been a ward councillor on Rother District Council since 1999.

But how did I get here?

I have lived in my division all my life.

While I was at school, I decided I wanted to be something more than an armchair politician. Of course, I didn’t realise then how long some of the meetings would go on.

My community

The people in my community live in a very beautiful area and we must work hard to see that it stays that way.

That’s what I’ve tried to do in my work on Rother District Council’s planning committee where I’ve been able to change things for the better, sometimes by not allowing people to change things.

Maintaining the county’s highways and footpaths is very important to protecting the Weald. Responsibility for this is shared between the County Council, the district and the parish councils, so it’s essential for the authorities to work together.

I’ve also worked hard to help the district council keep control of its budget.

My home life

I am single, with no children and work as a full-time politician.

The best way to balance your home life with council work is to hide the phone and the computer! Otherwise, it’s a matter of organising your schedule carefully, although it’s inevitable that you get double-booked sometimes.

My spare time

I enjoy a busy social life. My interests include motor racing and classic cars, gardening and keeping up with current affairs.
