Working hours and financial support

The amount of time you will need to spend on council work will depend on the extent of your council activities and responsibilities. The minimum is likely to be eight hours a week but many councillors spend much more time, and their positions are similar to full-time jobs. You will need to attend meetings during the day.

By law your employer is required to let you take a reasonable amount of time off to perform your duties as a councillor. This can be either paid or unpaid, depending on the terms and conditions your employer offers. You should discuss this with your employer before making a commitment.

Members' allowances

All councillors receive a basic allowance plus travelling and other expenses. Those with special duties, such as Cabinet members and committee chairs, may receive additional allowances. These payments vary depending on the role. Find out more about the scheme of members’ allowances.
