Director of Law and Personnel's responsibilities

Andrew is responsible for protecting the council’s legal position and for the personnel and training services of the council. Specific responsibilities include:

  • personnel – recruitment, training and employee relations within the council
  • democratic services, governance, and support and advice to councillors – including responsibility for the council's constitution and decision-making arrangements
  • workforce planning – ensuring that we have the people we need, with the skills that we need
  • transformation and organisational development – promoting change to make East Sussex County Council more effective, modern and cost-effective
  • scrutiny and best value – in-depth analysis of the services and performance of the council to ensure that taxpayers obtain best value for money within the resourses available
  • trading standards – ensuring that traders in East Sussex treat their customers fairly
  • archives and records management – the storage and protection of historic local documents
  • emergency planning – ensuring that the council can deal with major incidents and disasters when they occur
  • legal services – providing legal advice for councillors and council departments and ensuring that the council is always operating legally
  • registration services – ensuring that births, deaths and marriages in the county are properly registered.
