Simon is responsible for leading the Governance and Community Services Department and overseeing the important work to strengthen our customer focus and to improve access to services.
Areas of responsibility include:
- legal and democratic
- legal team – providing legal advice for councillors and Council departments and ensuring that the Council always operates legally
- democratic services – including responsibility for the Council's constitution and decision-making arrangements
- HM Coroner – who conducts postmortems and inquests.
- libraries and culture
- public libraries including our schools library and museums service
- County Record Office – the storage and protection of historic local documents
- support for the arts
- the registration of all births and deaths, and conducting marriages and other civil ceremonies in the county.
- personnel and training – policy advice for managers and employees,recruitment, training and employee relations within the Council
- communications and corporate consultation – ensuring that the Council keeps the public informed about its priorities and services and listens to residents' views
- voluntary sector – liaison, partnership and direct support to the voluntary community sector
- customer focus – lead responsibility for customer focus and the customer access strategy for the county.
