Equalities Scheme and statutory monitoring

The council has a duty under the Race Relations (Amendment) Act 2000 to establish a Race Equality Scheme to:

  • eliminate discrimination
  • promote equality of opportunity and good relations.

We also have duties under the Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) 2005 to publish a Disability Equality Scheme and to have due regard to the need to:

  • promote equality of opportunity between disabled people and other people
  • eliminate discrimination that is unlawful under the DDA
  • eliminate harassment of disabled people that is related to their disabilities
  • promote positive attitudes towards disabled people
  • encourage disabled people to participate in public life
  • take account of disabled people’s needs, even when more favourable treatment is required to ensure equal opportunities.
