Equalities Scheme and statutory monitoring
The council has a duty under the Race Relations (Amendment) Act 2000 to establish a Race Equality Scheme to:
- eliminate discrimination
- promote equality of opportunity and good relations.
We also have duties under the Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) 2005 to publish a Disability Equality Scheme and to have due regard to the need to:
- promote equality of opportunity between disabled people and other people
- eliminate discrimination that is unlawful under the DDA
- eliminate harassment of disabled people that is related to their disabilities
- promote positive attitudes towards disabled people
- encourage disabled people to participate in public life
- take account of disabled people’s needs, even when more favourable treatment is required to ensure equal opportunities.
