The Children's Services Scrutiny Committee is reviewing school exclusions. They want to find out why schools in East Sussex seem to choose exclusion more often than schools in other areas.
The review board will look at the breakdown of permanent and fixed term exclusions for each school in East Sussex. They will consider the reasons for the exclusions and look at data to compare East Sussex with other areas.
They want to find out:
- if behaviour is actually deteriorating over time, or if schools are ‘too quick' to exclude
- what proportion of exclusions are because of serious behavioural problems such as violence, carrying weapons or drugs
- if there are specific factors affecting primary school exclusions
- why children with Special Education Needs (SEN) have a higher risk of being excluded in East Sussex compared to other areas
- how effective exclusions are at improving behaviour in East Sussex
- if there are any alternatives to exclusion that might be more effective.
