Jennie's story – neglect

Jennie lives at home alone and receives personal support from paid carers, who give her medication twice a day.

At a medical check-up, which she's regularly taken to by her son, the doctor noticed that Jennie's medication wasn't working effectively. On returning home, her son checked the packet and noticed that Jennie hadn't been given any tablets for the past four days. Her usual carer was on holiday, but she was being looked after by a relief carer. Jennie's son immediately contacted us – as well as the GP and home care supervisor – and we started investigating.

The relief carer was disciplined and referred to the Independent Safeguarding Authority (who assess people working with vulnerable adults), and Jennie's home care plan was reviewed and updated.
