Blue badge review

Most Blue Badges are valid for three years. Six weeks before the expiry date, we will send you a review form. If you don't receive it within three weeks of the expiry date, please contact us.

If the life of your Disability Living Allowance award is less than three years, the badge will only be valid for that time.

How long does it take?

You should receive notification of whether or not your application has been successful within three weeks of submitting your renewal application.

Unless you automatically qualify, you should not assume that a badge will be re-issued to you, just because you previously held one.

Lost or stolen Blue Badges

If your badge is lost or stolen please contact us immediately. You will need to give us a Police crime reference number or lost property number before we can replace it. We have to charge a further £10 for the replacement.

Moving house

If you move to a new county and your Blue Badge hasn't expired, you don't need to re-apply – you can use it anywhere in Europe. Please inform us if you move out of this county as we will need to update our records.

If your badge expired and you move out of East Sussex, you must re-apply to your new local authority, or to us if you are new to East Sussex. It is your responsibility to apply to us in plenty of time before your badge expires.

Returning a badge

It is important that a Blue Badge is returned to the County Council if:

  • a review badge is issued (we need you to return the expired badge)
  • the badge has expired
  • the badge holder no longer needs it
  • the badge holder dies
  • the badge holder stops being eligible for the badge according to the criteria outlined, or
  • a duplicate badge has been issued in place of a lost or stolen badge and the original badge is subsequently recovered.

When a badge is returned to us it is securely destroyed in accordance with the County Council's Safe Disposal Policy. An applicant may remove their photograph before sending the badge back to us.
