Our policy on moving patients (the conveyance of patients)

What is the conveyance of patients?

The Conveyance of Patients policy relates to how people are taken from place to place who are being treated under the Mental Health Act.

The Department of Health issues a code of practice for people whose work falls within the scope of the Mental Health Act. This code requires us to draw up policies to guide this work.

One of these policies governs the moving of patients and describes how we aim to continually improve the speed, efficiency and dignity with which people subject to the act are treated. The way this policy is implemented is monitored by a group of people from many agencies.

How does this policy benefit me?

If you need to be admitted to hospital under the Mental Health Act, this policy ensures that all the agencies involved will do this in the most humane and least restrictive way. Your safety and the safety of others is paramount.
