Collecting your benefits or pension
If you need help with collecting your benefits or pension, you can fill in a BF56 form from Jobcentre Plus, or the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) for Older People. This allows you to nominate someone you trust to collect the money for you.
Operating a bank account
If you need help with operating a bank account, you should write to your bank or complete a third party mandate form (available from the bank).
You should carefully consider who you want to give this power to, as you are giving the person full access to your bank account.
Financial planning
If you need to plan your finances to pay for support it is a good idea to get independent professional advice.
This is particularly important if you are going into long-term residential care and need to make decisions about your property.
Appointing a lasting power of attorney
Lasting power of attorney is when you appoint someone to manage your affairs in the future in case you lose the capacity to manage them yourself.
You might consider appointing a lasting power of attorney if, for example, you have a degenerative condition such as Alzheimer's disease.
You can appoint a ‘property and financial affairs' lasting power of attorney to make decisions about your money and property.
