Are you under 18 and looking after a family member who is unable to look after themselves? This might be because they are ill or disabled, have a mental illness or have problems with alcohol or drugs.
Young carers often take on the kind of caring responsibilities that would normally done by an adult. This might involve:
- practical tasks, such as cooking, housework and shopping.
- physical care, such as lifting, helping a parent on stairs or with physiotherapy.
- personal care, such as dressing, washing, helping with toileting needs.
- administering medication.
- looking after younger brothers and sisters.

Phone: 01323 738390 – Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm.
Check out the Eastbourne-based charity ‘Care for the carers' above. There are a number of ways they might be able to help you:
- talk things over with them – by phone, or in person (either at home, or out at a coffee shop for example – anywhere you'll feel comfortable).
- they can talk to your school – to make them aware of your situation, for example if you're finding it difficult at home. Your school or college may be able to help with your studies.
- ask about practical help around the house – if you need some time to yourself, or if you are finding it difficult to get on with your school work for example.
- meet other young people – they can put you in touch with others in a similar situation. You can meet up and arrange things to do, or just talk things over with someone your own age, who'll understand what you're going through.
