Choosing the right wheelchair or scooter for you

There is a large variety of wheelchairs and scooters available. Your choice will depend on your individual needs, and things like access to a power point or storage space, so expert independent advice is essential.

Wheelchairs

The right wheelchair can help you conserve energy, enjoy a range of activities and open up a more independent lifestyle.

Some people find it helps to have two different types. For example, a self-propelled wheelchair for indoors and short distances, and a powered wheelchair for long distance outdoor use.

Scooters

Scooters have a low flat floor, use three, four or five wheels and are steered by a ‘tiller' (similar to handlebars on a bicycle, but smaller). To use a scooter you must be able to sit upright and have enough strength to steer and use the controls.

Scooters are mainly for outdoor use, as most are bigger and less manoeuvrable than most powered wheelchairs. Some can be easily dismantled to fit in a car boot. Larger ones will take you further and are more suitable for uneven surfaces.

Ask for medical advice

We recommend you arrange an assessment with a qualified physiotherapist. They will look at your personal requirements and will ensure that the equipment is the correct size and type for your needs.
