Sensory impairment

We provide a range of services for people who have hearing or sight problems and who find it difficult to do normal daily tasks in the home as a result. If you have sight or hearing problems we will aim to help you, and those who help look after you (known as carers), to live as independently as possible in your own home.

What help is available?

We employ trained people who will visit you to look at problems you may be having in your home and to help you find solutions. The help we might be able to provide includes:

  • advice – techniques to carry out day-to-day tasks such as personal care. We offer information on education, employment, counselling and other specialist.
  • equipment – practical suggestions on how to use equipment to help you with daily tasks that are difficult for you because of your sight or hearing loss. For example, preparing food and drink or hearing the doorbell.
  • adaptations – alterations to your home might help you to manage important daily activities more easily. For example, installing a louder bell for the door or intercom, having a flashing telephone, improving lighting or putting up rails to guide you around the house. We can give you advice about suitable alterations and tell you about possible help you could get to organise and fund the work. You can find out more by downloading the booklet on adaptations.
  • personal communication – recommend ways to reduce difficulties you may have with reading, writing and hearing including giving you access to sign language interpreters. We can also show you how to use communication aids stems such as the phone, text phone, type talk, talking book and cassette service.
  • mobility – give you advice so you can feel safe and confident when you move around in or outside your home.
  • disabled parking – information on a national scheme that helps people with limited mobility to park near shops and other community facilities.
