A259 Brighton to Newhaven bus corridor
Improving bus, cycle and pedestrian travel options are effective ways to reduce the number of cars on the roads. Making bus travel more reliable and reducing bus journey times means that public transport is a more attractive option.
Phase 2: Telscombe Cliffs – Newhaven
Proposals for Phase 2 of the A259 Bus Corridor between Telscombe Cliffs and Newhaven have been delayed and will not be available until after 2011.
Phase 1: Ovingdean – Telscombe Cliffs – completed November 2008
The first phase of the scheme to improve bus and cycle travel along the A259 between Brighton and Newhaven is now complete. Improvements between Ovingdean and Telscombe Cliffs include:
- dedicated bus lanes approaching the junction with Rottingdean High Street
- “intelligent “ signals at junctions that give priority to buses
- improved crossing facilities at Rottingdean High Street
- new roundabouts, traffic lights and crossing facilities at Longridge Avenue and Telscombe Cliffs Way
- an off-road cycle route, forming part of the National Cycle Network
- improved crossing facilities near bus stops throughout the route.
Brighton & Hove Bus journey times along the A259 have been reduced by up to 10 minutes during peak travel times. Frequency of services has also been increased.
