How we decide where to put traffic calming

Every year we receive many more requests for traffic calming than we have the resources to investigate.

We use a scoring system so that priority sites are tackled first. Factors taken into account include:

  • the number of reported crashes resulting in injury
  • the speed and volume of traffic
  • pedestrian, cycle and equestrian road users
  • the location of nearby schools
  • the width of the road.

The list is reviewed, and approved by the Lead Member for Transport and Environment.

Download the current Traffic calming – list of priority sites, below.

The most recent sites and decisions are detailed in the Lead Member for Transport meeting minutes – 23 February 2009.

High priority sites

Plans are drawn up for roads which have been identified as high priority.

We consult with local residents and approved schemes go ahead when money becomes available.

Funding for traffic calming is very limited and we cannot guarantee that we will be able to look at any of the schemes on the list before the next assessment is carried out.
