People who drive as part of their job are more likely to suffer from stress, tiredness and falling asleep at the wheel than other road users.
A quarter of road crashes in East Sussex involve drivers who are at work. Every serious crash is not only a personal tragedy, but can also lead to huge financial loss including increased insurance costs, compensation claims and sickness absence. Nationally, it has been estimated that work related crashes cost the economy nearly £3 billion every year.
Your responsibilities
The responsibility of employers for the safety of their employees who drive for work are clearly set out by the Health and Safety Executive.
Their website includes some useful case studies.
How we can help
The council's Road Safety team have halved the financial cost of the Council's crash claims.
We offer advice and resources to local businesses, providing strategies to minimise risk, examples of good practice and awareness-raising workshops.
We work in partnership with other local authorities, the Sussex Safer Roads Partnership and Sussex Enterprise to promote a culture of safe driving at work to help protect employees and employers from personal injury, financial loss and prosecution.
