Road casualties in East Sussex
In 2007, 2374 people were injured in 1720 crashes on East Sussex roads. 378 people were either killed or seriously injured during the year. Although casualties increased compared with 2006, there has been a 4% decrease in the number of people killed or seriously injured. This is encouraging, as it reverses the trend of the previous two years.
There was further reduction in the number of two-wheeled vehicle casualties, down by just under 4%, continuing the downward trend of the last four years. The number of child casualties remains at a similar level to 2006, having been reduced 19% from the previous year.
Government targets
The Government has set a target to be reached by 2010 to reduce the numbers of:
- people killed or seriously injured by 40%
- children killed or seriously injured by 50%
- the slight casualty rate by 10%.
Our targets
We plan to reach these targets two years earlier. By 2008 we aim to achieve double the reduction in the slight casualty rate.
We are currently on target to achieve the reductions for children killed or seriously injured and for slight casualties. However, the total number of people killed and seriously injured has rose for two years running to 2006 and it is now clear that this target will not be met, despite reductions in numbers in the past year. We will continue to work towards the national target for 2010.
Our strategy and programme of works aimed at casualty reduction is set out in Chapter 5 of the Local Transport Plan 2.
