Traffic lights
In East Sussex there are approximately 154 sets of traffic lights, including those at pedestrian crossings. East Sussex County Council is responsible for their placement, installation and maintenance.
Report a faulty traffic light
You can report a traffic light problem online or by phoning the Highways team on 0845 60 80 193.
If possible, tell us
- the names of all the roads at the junction
- any nearby landmarks such as shops, schools etc
and provide a description of the fault, eg:
- some or all lights not working
- lights not changing
- lights pointing in the wrong direction
- pedestrian crossing buttons not working
- lights damaged and in a dangerous condition.
How we decide where to put traffic lights
If a junction has a poor accident record or congestion caused by high traffic volumes, it may be improved by traffic lights.
When new locations for traffic lights are identified, we use traffic surveys and data from crash sites in East Sussex to decide whether traffic lights would make a junction safer.
Maintenance and repair
All traffic lights are remotely monitored by computer and are regularly maintained, including:
- inspections of all traffic lights four times a year
- bulk lamp changes twice a year
- lens cleaning twice a year.
When faults are reported, we aim to:
- repair single lamp failures or non-urgent faults within 24 hours
- carry out urgent fault repairs within four hours.
