Highway structures

What is a highway structure?

Highway structures include bridges, highway drains and sewers (culverts) and subways.

We are responsible for maintaining about 805 structures on the roads in East Sussex, including Newhaven Swing Bridge and Cuilfail Tunnel.

We also maintain the many kilometres of retaining walls that support the roads.

How we maintain highway structures

Our priority is to ensure that structures are kept in a safe condition, suitable for the loads that they are designed to support.

To help achieve this, we:

  • carry out general inspections of highway supporting structures every 2 years
  • have a prioritised programme of regular, preventative and remedial maintenance
  • have a bridge management programme which helps us maintain our bridges in a well-timed and cost effective way
  • regularly assess the load-carrying capacity of structures.

Reporting a fault

To report a problem with a bridge or other highway structure, please use our fault reporting system.
