What we do
We are responsible for:
- all general aspects of highway maintenance such as grass cutting, gulley emptying and repairing potholes
- routine inspections of all roads and footways
- highway improvement schemes
- 24 hour response to emergencies that affect the highway (flooding, fallen trees, oil spills etc)
- winter salting/gritting and snow clearance
- temporary traffic orders, including road closures
- control and co-ordination of work by utility companies such as gas, water and electricity
- licensing of skips, scaffolding, hoardings etc on the highway
- enforcement action against encroachments, obstructions and other unlawful activities
- highway signing and lining
- local traffic management, such as traffic calming schemes
- adoption of new roads and footways
- maintenance of wildlife verges.
