Temporary road closures

Roads sometimes need to be temporarily closed to allow work on or near them to be done safely. They can also be closed for public events.

Street parties, fetes and community events

District and borough councils deal with applications for road closures for those who want to hold a street party, procession, parade or similar event.

Find links to your district or borough council, and tips for planning your event on our page about Street parties and fetes.

Roadworks and larger public events

We use a legal process called a temporary traffic regulation order (TTRO) to carry out a temporary road closure or other restriction for:

  • planned or emergency roadworks
  • building works being carried out on or near the road
  • larger public events.

The police can also close roads for safety reasons.

We need a minimum of 12 weeks to complete the legal process and advertise the closure in local newspapers.

To apply for a TTRO please contact the Network Management Team.

Emergency road closures

If a road needs to be closed in an emergency, for example because of a gas or water leak, please call our contact centre.
