The decision to close a school due to bad weather is made by the headteacher on that morning.
They create an alert by writing the details into an automated system that immediately displays that information on this website, emails county council teams and radio stations. Those closures are published live here:

Roads
If you have to drive during during bad weather, please make sure that you and your vehicle are prepared for the journey, and that you're aware of any likely delays or blocked routes. You can get traffic news via email alerts and on your mobile phone:
Buses
Bus operators have a difficult time during periods of bad weather and unpredictable traffic. You are best advised to contact Traveline to check whether your service is affected.
Trains
Before leaving for the station, you can check departure boards online for cancellations or delays – the site below is also accessible via your mobile phone.
Availability of Council services
We do all we can to maintain essential Council services in extreme weather conditions, but please contact us before trying to visit one of our offices or libraries
Essential services include:
- home care of elderly and vulnerable people
- child protection
- road gritting
- social workers supporting hospital teams
- essential road maintenance.

Libraries
All libraries are open as normal. If there is bad weather, please phone Library Enquiries on 0345 60 80 196 to find out if your local library is affected.
During opening hours you can renew books by phoning 0345 60 80 195. Our online library services are available 24 hours a day – use your library card to sign into E-library – renew your loans.
